Lesson 13 - Jacob and Esau

God Chooses Jacob Over Esau

Bible Story – Lesson 13

Hello boys and girls! Happy Sunday! I am still praying for you all as we can’t be together yet. I pray you are making some wonderful memories with your families and that God blesses this time together.

Today we are actually going to be talking about blessings. We are going to learn about two of Abraham’s sons, Jacob and Esau.

Do you remember that God made a covenant with Abraham? A covenant is a promise. God promised that Abraham would have many children, that he would have many nations, and that God would be with him and all these nations. This promise would be passed down to the first-born child of every generation for many years.

Abraham’s son Isaac married a woman named Rebekah. She became pregnant with twins. These babies were unique! The fought even while Rebekah was still pregnant. God told Rebekah that her two children would be very different from each other. He said that the older would even serve the younger.

This was strange because usually the oldest child becomes the family leader. Even so, God chose the younger son and passed the covenant on to him. When the twins were born the were, in fact, very different. Esau was born first and he had red hair all over his body. He didn’t look like his brother Jacob at all.

As they boys got older, they liked doing different things. Esau like to hunt and spend time outdoors. Jacob preferred to stay home. He learned to cook like his mom.

One day Jacob made some delicious stew.  Esau had been out early in the morning hunting and he was very hungry.  So hungry that he could smell the stew from a far way off.

As soon as Esau got home, he asked Jacob, "Quick, let me have some of your stew, I'm starving!"  Jacob replied, "First give me your birthright."

A birthright is an extra blessing for the oldest child. Jacob and Esau's family believed that the oldest child should receive double of all the things they would leave behind after they died. Things like money and the farm with all the animals.

Esau could only think about how hungry he was, so he gave his birthright to his brother Jacob. By choosing food over his birthright Esau did a bad thing. He made a decision he couldn't change and he disappointed God by not seeing the importance of his special gift. he chose a silly thing like a bowl of soup instead.

The story isn't over yet. The next part of the story is about Jacob and the bad choices he makes.

Isaac was getting old and he wasn't able to see anymore. He wanted to give his oldest and favorite son Esau his blessing before he died. This blessing was the special promise that God promised to his grandfather Abraham, and then to his father Isaac.
Isaac loved the food that Esau hunted. He told Esau to go hunt and prepare a special meal for him and then he would give him the blessing.

Rebekah overheard Isaac talking to Esau and rushed to tell her favorite son Jacob.  She said to Jacob, "Your father is about to give Esau his blessing and I want you to have it instead. You need to go get two of our goats and bring them to me,I will prepare them just the way Isaac likes it. Then you can take it to him and he will give you the blessing instead."

Jacob replied, "But, Esau is a hairy man. What if our father touches me and realizes that I'm tricking him?"

His mother said to him, "Don't worry you can wear Esau's clothes and we'll put the goat hair on your hands and neck so he'll never know."

So they did just that and Jacob went to see his father pretending to be Esau.
In this way Jacob tricked Isaac into giving him the blessing meant for Esau. When Esau found out he was furious! He was so angry that he wanted to kill his brother. Rebekah sent Jacob away to save his life.

Even through this trickery and sin, God still chose to bless Jacob. This is a picture of salvation. Salvation comes to those God has chosen before their birth. It comes according to God’s choice, not according to what humans want. The only way to be saved is to entrust ourselves to God through Jesus Christ.

Thanks for listening today. Let’s all keep praying for each other and our world. Have a great week!

Every good action and every perfect gift is from God.

Lesson 12 - Isaac

Bible Story – Lesson 12

Hello boys and girls! I pray you all had a good week. I also hope you enjoyed our Easter lessons. Learning about Jesus’ sacrifice is so important!

This week we are going back to the old testament to continue learning about Abraham. I wonder if any of you remember what we have learned so far?

Abraham was a faithful servant of God. He and his wife Sarah had no children, but God promised them a child in their old age. He also promised to make Abraham’s descendants as numerous as the stars! We learned how Abraham did what God asked and he was blessed. He wasn’t perfect, but he was faithful. He did have a son, and his name was Isaac. Today we are going to learn a little more about him.

Isaac was the promised son of Abraham and Sarah. When he was born, his parents rejoiced and grew strong in their faith in God. After God strengthened their faith and gave them time to mature, He brought the most difficult test to Abraham, to prove that his faith was real.

When Isaac was a boy, God tested Abraham by telling him to go to Mount Moriah and offer Isaac as a sacrifice. Abraham was confused and sad, but He trusted God. This was a way to prove that Abraham loved God even more than He loved the blessings God had given him.

I can’t imagine how hard this must have been for Abraham, can you? I’m sure Abraham and Sarah were so sad. It really shows how great their faith was for them to be able to obey God in this moment. God had promised to make a great nation out of Abraham that would bless the world. I imagine it would have been very difficult, even still.

Abraham trusted God and took Isaac to the top of Mount Moriah. Just as he was about to sacrifice Isaac, an angel of the Lord stopped him. Abraham had proven his faith to God. God then proved His promise to Abraham by providing a ram for the sacrifice.

Do you know what is really significant about God providing a ram for the sacrifice? It is a picture of what He would do for us in the future. He sent Jesus to die in our place. As a sacrifice for our sins.

It’s important for us to always remember to love God above everything else. He loves us so much and sacrificed His only Son for us.

Do not lay a hand on the boy, he said. Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.
Genesis 22:12

Happy Easter! Lesson 4 - He is Risen!

He is Risen!

Hey everyone! Happy Easter! I know a lot of you are excited for egg hunts and candy, but do you know the real reason we celebrate Easter?

Do you remember last week’s lesson? We learned how Jesus died on a cross for our sins. He died on the cross and was buried in a borrowed tomb. Thankfully, for us, He didn’t stay in that tomb! Three days later He rose from the dead. That is the real reason we celebrate Easter! I can’t think of any better reason to celebrate, can you?

We’ve talked often about how Jesus was Israel’s long-awaited King. Unfortunately, Israel rejected their king. The religious leaders, the nation, and even His disciples rejected and abandoned Him. We learned through His resurrection though, that Jesus is also the King over life and death.

Three days after Jesus was crucified, Mary and Mary Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb to bring spices for His burial. As they got close to the tomb there was an earthquake and an angel came down from Heaven. That would have been quite a shock for the women! The angel rolled the giant stone away from the tomb and sat on top of it. The guards who were watching over the tomb were terrified! They were so afraid they couldn’t move or speak. The angel told the women not to be afraid. The angel said that Jesus had risen, just as He said He would. The angel then told them to go and tell the disciples what had happened.

The woman hurried back, full of happiness. They couldn’t wait to tell the disciples and find Jesus!

As they were on their way Jesus appeared to them. They immediately fell at His feet to worship Him. Jesus told them to tell the disciples to go to Galilee and that is where they would see Jesus.

After the disciples went to Galilee they sat around and waited for Jesus. As they were talking to each other, Jesus walked into the room. Even though they had heard He was alive, they were in disbelief.

Jesus asked them why they looked at Him as if they had just seen a ghost. He told them to look at the scars on His hands and feet, and to touch Him to see for themselves that He was real.

Jesus said that soon He would go to Heaven, but He would give them what God had promised, the Holy Spirit. When we become Christians, God gives us the Holy Spirit to live in us. The Holy Spirit makes us know when we are doing wrong. He reminds us so that we can ask forgiveness for our sins.

Then Jesus gave the disciples the great commission. He told them to go into all the world and make disciples. A disciple is someone who is a loyal follower of Jesus. He ended His great commission with one last encouragement. He told the disciples that they had nothing to fear. He told them that He would always be with them, even to the end of the age.

Jesus is with us too. And when we accept Him into our hearts, His Holy Spirit will guide us and comfort us.

Jesus was crucified and buried, but death could not hold the Son of God. He demonstrated Jesus’ victory over sin and death by raising Him from the dead. This is why we worship Him. And one day everyone will confess that Jesus is Lord and every knee will bow to Him.

The angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where He lay.

Matthew 28:5-6

Easter 3 - Jesus' Sacrifice

Jesus' Sacrifice

Hi boys and girls! I am praying you all are having a good week. We really miss seeing you all at church. We can’t wait until we can get together again and worship God at church! Until then, I hope you are enjoying our online lessons.

This week we are going to talk about a very sad day in history that lead to the greatest day in history.

Do you remember what we learned about last week? We learned how Jesus’ friend betrayed Him. Judas turned Jesus over to the religious leaders of the time who didn’t believe that He was the son of God. They were jealous of the attention He was getting and decided to get rid of Him. They plotted to have him arrested and then crucified.

Do any of you know what you want to be when you grow up? I bet some of you want to be doctors, teachers, mechanics, police officers, or lots of other things. Did you know that Jesus was born for a very specific purpose? He was born to die on the cross to pay the price for our sins. His death did more than just that though. When a sinner trusts Jesus for salvation, the righteousness of Jesus is credited to him. In God’s sight those who trust Christ are righteous.

If you are on a sports team, what happens when a player gets hurt? Someone else plays for them, don’t they? They substitute. A substitute is someone who does something that you are unable to do, in your place and on your behalf. This is what Jesus did for us. He gave His own life to save ours. He died so that we could be right with God. Because of His sacrifice our sins can be forgive and we can have a right relationship with God.

So, Jesus was brought to Pontius Pilate, who was the governor at that time. He asked Jesus if He was the king of the Jews. Jesus said, “Yes, I am.” This made the religious leaders angry. Pilate couldn’t find any reason to punish Jesus, but the crowds demanded He be crucified. Pilate finally told the people to do what they wanted with Him.

They led Him to a hill called Golgotha. When they reached the top they nailed Jesus to the cross and placed it between to other prisoners. After so much suffering, Jesus called out, “It is finished!”, and he died.

This seems like a sad story, but it is actually one of the greatest events in history. Jesus died knowing that you and I would do things wrong, that we would sin. Even all those years ago, as He was dying on the cross, He knew what we were going to do in our lives.

He died for our sins. So now when we ask God to forgive us, and we are truly sorry for what we’ve done, God forgives us. He forgets it even happened! He loves us that much!

What an amazing gift from an amazing savior!
