He is Risen!
Hey everyone! Happy Easter! I know a lot of you are excited
for egg hunts and candy, but do you know the real reason we celebrate Easter?
Do you remember last week’s lesson? We learned how Jesus
died on a cross for our sins. He died on the cross and was buried in a borrowed
tomb. Thankfully, for us, He didn’t stay in that tomb! Three days later He rose
from the dead. That is the real reason we celebrate Easter! I can’t think of
any better reason to celebrate, can you?
We’ve talked often about how Jesus was Israel’s
long-awaited King. Unfortunately, Israel rejected their king. The religious
leaders, the nation, and even His disciples rejected and abandoned Him. We
learned through His resurrection though, that Jesus is also the King over life
and death.
Three days after Jesus was crucified, Mary and Mary
Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb to bring spices for His burial. As they got close
to the tomb there was an earthquake and an angel came down from Heaven. That
would have been quite a shock for the women! The angel rolled the giant stone
away from the tomb and sat on top of it. The guards who were watching over the
tomb were terrified! They were so afraid they couldn’t move or speak. The angel
told the women not to be afraid. The angel said that Jesus had risen, just as
He said He would. The angel then told them to go and tell the disciples what
had happened.
The woman hurried back, full of happiness. They couldn’t
wait to tell the disciples and find Jesus!
As they were on their way Jesus appeared to them. They
immediately fell at His feet to worship Him. Jesus told them to tell the
disciples to go to Galilee and that is where they would see Jesus.
After the disciples went to Galilee they sat around and
waited for Jesus. As they were talking to each other, Jesus walked into the
room. Even though they had heard He was alive, they were in disbelief.
Jesus asked them why they looked at Him as if they had just
seen a ghost. He told them to look at the scars on His hands and feet, and to
touch Him to see for themselves that He was real.
Jesus said that soon He would go to Heaven, but He would
give them what God had promised, the Holy Spirit. When we become Christians,
God gives us the Holy Spirit to live in us. The Holy Spirit makes us know when
we are doing wrong. He reminds us so that we can ask forgiveness for our sins.
Then Jesus gave the disciples the great commission. He told
them to go into all the world and make disciples. A disciple is someone who is
a loyal follower of Jesus. He ended His great commission with one last
encouragement. He told the disciples that they had nothing to fear. He told
them that He would always be with them, even to the end of the age.
Jesus is with us too. And when we accept Him into our
hearts, His Holy Spirit will guide us and comfort us.
Jesus was crucified and buried, but death could not hold
the Son of God. He demonstrated Jesus’ victory over sin and death by raising
Him from the dead. This is why we worship Him. And one day everyone will
confess that Jesus is Lord and every knee will bow to Him.
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as he
said. Come and see the place where He lay.
